Settling In

I’m writing this long overdue entry from my new apartment in LA. I’m still adjusting to my new place and getting used to the heavy footsteps of my upstairs neighbor. Back home, I rarely heard my neighbors, only the children racing down the hallway to the elevator. But here, I hear everything and I’m afraid everyone can hear me. The walls are so thin that I even hate talking on the phone at night, for fear that my neighbors will judge my conversations.

This morning I had my headphones on, listening to the same song over and over again while trying to write. I faintly heard a strange gurgling sound, but I assumed it was the neighbor’s washing machine. It wasn’t until I noticed my cat frozen in place, staring intently in the kitchen, that I slipped off my headphones and went over to investigate. I looked out the living room window first to see if I could see my elderly neighbors lugging bloated mesh bags of laundry back to their units. But then the gurgling happened again and I turned to see that it was coming from my sink.

My sink, my barely used beautiful double sink, was now filled with dirty brown water and bubbling up from the drain. I ran the garbage disposal, which sucked down the water in one sink, only to re-fill up again and gurgle loudly as if to give me the middle finger.  The maintenance guy came in the late afternoon, by which time the sinks had both drained, and left a thick residue and leftover noodles (not mine, so gross) along its walls. He explained to me that my neighbors above me probably clogged the mainline. I’m not used to that: upstairs neighbors that send their leftovers through the pipes and into my sinks. Plural.

There are two things, however, that I really love about my apartment.  First, the fact that this is a pet-friendly building. Chompers is able to run around without me shushing her, I can buy all the over-sized cat furniture I want without having to sneak it in, and I don’t have to hide her in a reusable Sam’s Club bag whenever I have to take her to the vet.  Second, and this is the most important, is the fact that this place feels so unfamiliar. The problem with my old apartment and with Hawaii in general was that it was too familiar, making it hard for me to focus. But here, it’s easier to write for a few hours without interruption.

It feels like I’ve been magically lifted out of my old life and placed somewhere new and exciting. As I watch my cat pace back and forth curiously on the kitchen counter, I realize we’re both experiencing our lives through new eyes.

Hey! I came across your site from this post (was googling stuff bout LA cause i'm visiting there for the first time early next month from India! I just spent a good 2 hours reading your blog!! Very well written :) Love the quarter life crisis! I'm going through a pre-quarterlife crisis (if there is anything like that, I'm 23) and now quite frankly looking forward to my trip to escape :P

Also, found your twitter page and saw that you went to Thrilling Adventure!!! It's on my list of things to do in LA! I have a few questions that I'll mail you about if that's okay.

    Hey Romy!

Thank you for taking the time to read my humble blog :) We can suffer through our pre-quarter life and quarter life crises together lol

So when are you coming to LA? What brings you here? You should definitely check out the Thrilling Adventure! I saw from your profile, you listed a Criminal Minds blog. Are you fan? I think Paget Brewster and Kirsten Vangsness are both part of the core troupe for that show. I saw Paget in this past show and for next month's show, I hope I get to see both of 'em!

Definitely shoot me an email at iwontmakeyoueggs@gmail.com and I'll try to answer your questions as best I can!

Holy crap I LOVE Criminal Minds!!!! Like obsession level. I'm actually making a trip to the US for my cousin's graduation in NJ, but worked for two years, scrimped and saved and now I'm visiting NY and LA also! I'm in LA from the 1st to the 11th of July. Paget's show is on the 10th so making sure I catch that before I leave.

It's going to be an interesting 11 days because i really know NOONE in LA. I'm still figuring out accomodation (Banana Bungalow hostel in West Hollywood is looking likely) and stuff :P I've never done anything like this (vacation alnone), and I really want to visit LA, so I figure why should I wait for people to make my life happen right? If you're going for the show on the 10th, I want in please? I'd love some company (not in a creepy way :P ) and I really like PB and KV. And not to mention Paul F Tompkins :D

I love love Criminal Minds as well! I usually have it playing in the background (that, or Castle, which is my newest obsession) while I'm doing work.

How exciting about your trip! NY is an awesome city as well, I visited there a few times while going to school in DC. There was so much to do, I felt like I didn't get a chance to do it all! Not sure where the Banana Bungalow hostel is, but if it's in West Hollywood, it should be relatively close to the Largo theater (where the show will be at). I've only been to West Hollywood a few times, but it's an awesome little area. Unlike other parts of LA, I find that people in West Hollywood are really nice (generally)!

Have you bought your tickets yet for the show? If not, here's the link – http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/115485. Buy it ASAP because the last show sold out and you weren't able to buy tickets at the door. I think they assign seats according to when you purchased your tickets. I already bought mine, so we wouldn't be sitting together, but if you come to the show, we should meet so at least you know someone there! :)

OMG OMG OMG!!! I booked my ticket!!! Thanks for saying you'll hang out with me! Even if we don't really sit together or whatever. I didn't know it was assigned seating. I got something called a “General” ticket and a ticket number. I have to show my ID at the door to collect it. Now I just gotta figure out taxis. Sucks not knowing how to drive!! Wish LA had public transport like NYC or SF :( Or Bangalore, where I'm from. You don't need to know how to drive if you live here :P

Yay!! Now I'm super excited about this trip! And YAY Criminal Minds! Do you know I actually have a Bachelors in Psych? Lol! Anyway, keep blogging and keep in touch!

WHOO HOOO on booking your ticket! I didn't know it was assigned seats either, until we got there. I got there super early to make sure we'd get good seats and when we checked in at will-call, the guy gave me a piece of paper with my seat assignment on it. Then near the entrance of the theater, there's a seating chart so you know where to go.

I looked up where your hostel is, it's actually not very far from the theater at all. Probably like a 5 minute cab ride, so it should be fine. I think there should be tons of cabs in your area as well, so it'll be easy to get there. So you have your BA in Psych?? That's way awesome! Mine is in Religion, oddly enough lol

Don't worry, I'll do what I can to make your trip to the theater super easy!

I have a triple major, so I technically have degrees in Psych, English Literature and Journalism. Now I work for a company where I write and design intranet pages and manage their content collateral. It's in interesting job, but I need a break, so I'm skipping out for a month. I'll give you my american number when we chat on skype. I'll be in NYC first (seeing/meeting Kate Walsh!!!) and then I'll be coming to LA :)

That's so good that the hostel is a short while away from the theatre. I hope I have good seats! Also, is it supper theatre? Like can you order food there or do you have to eat before you go? It's gonna be weird, because in India, no one eats dinner before 8pm, I eat it at 9. In the states “dinner” is at 530 or 6!!! LOL! So I dunno what kind of place this is :P

Anyway, hope to see you on Skype soooooon! :S
